The World Wrestling Entertainment, also known as WWE and formerly as World Wrestling Federation, is a pro wrestling entertainment company that puts up many events and regular shows in which pro wrestlers fight each other on the ring for titles and as part of special matches. It is the most popular pro wrestling program in the whole world, founded in 1952 as a promotional pro wrestling event which later went corporate in 1980. It was founded by Roderick McMahon and Toots Mondt and presently has its headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut. Its current chairman is Vince McMahon who is also its majority owner. As the biggest pro wrestling promotion globally, it is broadcast to over thirteen million people in the US and to millions more in one hundred and forty five countries of the world, in thirty different languages. Its major editions are SmackDown, WrestleMania and Raw whose events can be seen live through WWE tickets.

WWE, aside from being the biggest pro wrestling promotion in the world, is also representative of much of the history of wrestling from 1950s onwards. It expanded to what it is today under the hands of Vince McMahon who brought in pro wrestling legends such as Hulk Hogan, Roddy Poper, Andre the Giant and the Iron Sheik. He then launched what he dubbed as the Super Bowl of pro wrestling; WrestleMania, an event that has become the highest attended indoor sports event ever, with over ninety thousand visitors. The first edition of this pay-per-view event was held in 1985 and became a massive success. In 1987, a match featuring Hulk Hogan VS. Andre the Giant was viewed by over thirty three million people and became the most watched pro wrestling event in North America, a record WrestleMania still holds.

In the nineties, WWE became home to a new generation of pro wrestlers who would go on to become legends later on. The Undertaker, Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels as just a few of them. Today, it is home to numerous pro wrestlers, titles and events. The current WWE Champion is CM Punk who won the title in the Survivor Series held in 2011 from Alberto Del Rio. The US Champion is Santino Marella who won the title from Jack Swagger in the Raw Supershow held in 2012. In SmackDown, Sheamus is the World Heavyweight Champion after defeating Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania held in 2012 whereas Big Show is the Intercontinental Champion after defeating Cody Rhodes. Primo and Epico have become the Tag Team champions after defeating Air Boom in a Raw live event whereas the Diva Champion is Beth Phoenix after defeating Kelly Kelly in Hell in a Cell.

In 2011, a number of WWE pro wrestlers won its biggest wrestling pay-per-view events. Alberto Del Rio won the Raw Money in the Bank event whereas Daniel Bryan won the SmackDown version. Andy Leavine joined WWE after winning WWE Tough Enough whereas Johnny Curtis was the WWE NXT winner. Sheamus was both the King of the Ring in 2010 and the Royal Rumble winner in 2012. Raw is one of the two main programs that are a part of WWE and it airs on the USA Network in the US. It premiered on the same channel in 1993 and holds the record for being the Longest Running Weekly Episodic TV Show in History. It has been broadcast live in many countries and is home to CM Punk, Chris Jericho, Brock Lesnar, The Rock, John Cena, Kane, Rey Mysterio and Triple H.

WWE SmackDown is the other main program and it debuted in 1999. It currently airs on Syfy and is home to wrestlers such as Big Show, Aksana, Alicia Fox, Booker T, The Great Khali, Mark Henry, Randy Orton and The Undertaker. Popular pay per view events that can be watched live through WWE tickets include Royal Rumble, Summerslam, WrestleMania, Hell in a Cell, Elimination Chamber and Money in the Bank.
