War Horse is a play by Nick Stafford, based upon the famous novel by Michael Morpurgo that was turned into an Oscar nominated movie of the same name, directed by Steven Spielberg. It premiered in 2007 at the Royal National Theatre located in the capital of England, London. It is an English language drama whose setting is in 1914 during the end of the First World War and covers both England and France. It is the story of a brave horse and his owner, a story that has already captivated millions in print and through its feature film. On stage, it has left viewers speechless and critics without a negative remark to make; a masterpiece worthy of being seen live through War Horse tickets.
War Horse the play premiered in New York City at the Lincoln Center Theater and at the Prince of Wales Theatre in Toronto, Canada. Based upon the best selling work of fiction of the same name, released in 1982, and penned by Michael Morpugo, it was an instant success soon after its premiere. It has premiered on Broadway and West End with both the productions directed by Tom Morris and Marianne Elliott with Toby Sedgwick as the choreographer. The story behind this play begins during the First World War when a horse belonging to a boy is sold to the cavalry to be used in the war and gets sent to France. The story follows Joey, the horse, as it gets caught up in the war, fights on both sides and makes friends with other horses. The play’s other star, Albert, is however saddened by his loss and thus begins a dangerous journey to bring back Joey, who is more friend than horse to him. This is made even more dangerous by the fact that he is too young to join the army. This play’s story then goes on with many twists and turns that have already left millions stuck to their seats in enchantment. After its premier at the Royal National Olivier Theatre, it made its debut on West End at the New London Theatre in 2009. It starred Kit Harington as Albert and contained a musical score composed by Adrian Sutton. It used life size puppet horses and received a number of awards including the London Critics Circle Theatre Award, the Evening Standard Theatre Award and the Olivier Award. It was viewed live by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, becoming the first private theatre visit by the Queen in four years.

It was reviewed by The Times as ‘the theatrical event of the decade’ and by 2011, in just four years of its premiere, it had been seen live by over a million people on stage. This was a massive achievement and was followed soon after by the play’s Broadway debut at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre. This production was led by the original British creative team but with a new American cast with the role of Albert being played by Seth Numrich and then by Andrew Durand. Other members of the cast included Matt Doyle playing Billy Narracott, Stephen Plunkett playing Nicholls, Peter Hermann playing Friedrich Muller and Alyssa Breshanan playing Rose Narracott. This production paused for some time in 2011 but resumed again for an open ended run that is still ongoing. It result in record ticket sales and a critical acclaim that led to it being awarded with five Tony Awards including the Tony Award for Best Play.
