Story of Mamma Mia:

Plot and/or ending details follow.

The story of Mamma Mia takes place on a fictional Greek island, where Donna owns and manages a tavern, catering to locals and tourists alike. Her daughter Sophie, who is engaged to a young man named Sky, has always wanted to know whom her father is, but Donna won't talk about her past. Sophie discovers her mother's old diary and finds entries in which Donna describes intimate dates with three men. Sophie believes that one of these men is her father, and sends each an invitation to her wedding without letting her mother know. The three men arrive a few weeks later: Harry "Head Banger" Bright, Bill Austin, and Sam Carmichael. Each has his quirks. Harry is a nerdy banker with a unique laugh; Bill is a stereotypical Australian; Sam is an architect who had an affair with Donna while engaged to another woman. In addition, Donna has invited two of her old friends; Tanya, a rich three-time divorcée, and Rosie, an unmarried woman who likes to have fun. Twenty years ago, the three of them were a singing group called "Donna and the Dynamos." Sophie initially believes Bill is her father because his aunt Sophia left a large amount of money for family and Donna says Sophie was named after a Sophia. Sophie asks Bill to give her away at the wedding, and he agrees. Soon thereafter, Harry and Sam figure out what's going on, and each approaches Sophie. Each of the three possible fathers now believes that he is giving Sophie away.

Sophie sends notes to the three men saying that her mother is going to give her away instead. In the meantime, she and Sky are having second thoughts about their impending marriage: they feel that they do not know each other as well as they should. Sam confronts Donna about his possibly being Sophie's dad, and a bitter confrontation ensues: Donna tells him that she's glad that she raised Sophie alone, without a man's worthless "help." As the scene progresses, it becomes more evident that Sam and Donna are still desperately in love, angrily and against their wills. At the wedding, it is finally made clear to all three men that Sophie's paternity is undetermined, but everyone involved agrees that it doesn't matter which is her biological parent: Sophie loves all three and they are all happy to be a part of her life at last. Sophie and Sky announce that they have decided not to marry--at least not just yet. Instead of letting the wedding preparations go to waste, Donna and Sam swallow their pride and are married instead. Meanwhile, Rosie and Bill have become attracted to each other. Harry, on the other hand, who has made frequent references to his "other half" throughout the show, is revealed to be in a committed homosexual relationship with a man named Laurence (Nigel). Sophie and Sky leave the island to travel the world together.
