Spring is the best season of the year in America! Apart from the change in the weather for better, there is one more thing which endears it to the Americans; baseball’s pre-season! Called Spring Training, it is the beginning of America’s national pastime, without actually starting the regular season. The event usually lasts for six weeks and ends before the beginning of the regular season. A cursory look at the history of the event and it is clear that the intention of those who came up with this fun-filled event was to give the Americans an opportunity to warm-up before the beginning of the regular season. For this reason alone, Spring Training events were held in cities like Los Angeles, Phoenix, New Orleans, Tulsa, Hot Springs, and other great American cities. And while the training season had initially started in 1890’s, it became a permanent feature of America’s national pastime by the year 1910. Today, however, the event does not take place all over the United States, but in two states only; Arizona and Florida. Since there are two separate Spring Training sites, therefore they are given two different names as well; Arizona’s training session is called, Cactus League, and the other in Florida, Grapefruit League. One of the most interesting features of this event is that all Cactus League teams get to play with each other, irrespective of their regular season league affiliations. The same goes for the teams in Grapefruit League. Some of the most famous teams in the Cactus League are the Oakland Athletics, the Texas Rangers and others. While the most renowned teams in Grapefruit League are the New York Yankees, and the St. Louis Cardinals, to name just a few.
 
The teams do not wear their regular uniforms during the practice sessions; they wear their batting practice uniforms, which is another feature that distinguishes Spring Training from the regular season. Also, in the beginning of the event the position players do not play; they play later. It is the catchers and the pitchers who start off the pre-season, since they benefit the most from a prolonged training season. Furthermore, new players play like they would in the regular season, to secure a position in their team, further exciting the audience, giving them the value for their money.
