Roger Waters came across fellow Pink Floyd member Rogers Barrett (Syd), while he was still a teenager studying at Cambridge High School for Boys. He met Richard Wright and Nick Mason in 1962 at Regent Street Polytechnic institute in London, and played their earliest music in autumn of the following year, in a band founded by bassist Clive Metcalfe and singer Keith Noble, who at the time, called themselves Sigma 6 or Meggadeaths.  With Waters on rhythm guitars, Wright on keyboards, Mason on drums, and occasional vocal accompaniment of Sheilagh, Noble’s sister, the group was geared to play at private functions while rehearsing in their school’s basement tearoom. By 1963 Noble and Metcalfe departed to form their own groups, so that the remaining group artists asked guitarist Bob Klose, and Barrett to join in. By the beginning of the next year, the band gained popularity as the Screaming Abdabs or just Abdabs, only to later try out other names such as Spectrum Five, Leonard’s Lodgers and finally, Tea Set. By mid 1965, the group started calling itself Pink Floyd Sound, which was eventually shortened to Pink Floyd in a matter of months.
 

Through its initial period, Pink Floyd was led by songwriter, guitarist and front man Roger Barrett, till 1968 when issues regarding his personal life made him incapable of functioning well in the band, as a result of which Roger Waters stepped up to artistically direct the group.
