The New York Knicks is an American pro basketball team that is part of the NBA’s Eastern Conference in its famous Atlantic Division. It was founded in 1946 as an franchise of the pro basketball league, the Basketball Association of America, and has since then been playing pro basketball and attracting thousands to its live matches through New York Knicks tickets. The New York Knicks was one of the founders of the Basketball Association of America which would then go on to become the NBA after merging with the National Basketball League in 1949. It is one of two teams within the NBA to be located in its original city from its founding, added to the Boston Celtics, and is known fondly by the nickname the Knnickerbocker. It was formed when Walter A. Brown, owner of the Boston Garden, thought of hosting basketball games in hockey arenas when hockey games weren’t played. He then met with a group of eighteen businessmen and thus the Basketball Association of America with its charter franchises was born. Ned Irish, a retired sportswriter and college basketball promoter, was granted a BAA franchise in New York City. He was then the president of the Madison Square Garden and he ushered in a new era of basketball.
 
The New York Knicks then held their first training camp at the Nevele Country Club in the Catskill Mountains. Twenty five players from various universities and clubs were invited for the three week camp and a roster was assembled. The first head coach was Neil Cohalan and the first game played was against the Toronto Huskies at the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. Not only would this be its first game but also the BAA’s first game as a basketball league. It went on to defeat the Toronto Huskies in front of a crowd over seven thousand large and the history of pro basketball as it is today began. They made it to the quarter finals after defeating the Cleveland Rebels and went on to the BAA semi-finals, playing against the Philadelphia Warriors.
 
The New York Knicks again made history when they added Wataru Misaka, a Japanese American guard on to their roster, making him the first non-Caucasian pro basketball player and making basketball history. Soon after, they became massively successful and constantly made it to the playoffs as the chief contenders. They appeared consecutively in the NBA Finals and dominated the NBA for much of their history. They have won a number of championships and titles including the NBA Championship a record two times. This championship was won in 1970 and 1973. Eight Conference titles are the property of the New York Knicks and these were won in the fifties, seventies and the nineties. They have also won four Division titles and nine of their numbers are officially retired in honor of the players who wore them.
 
Today, many New York Knicks players have been inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. The first player inducted was Tom Gola in 1976 and the latest inductees are Patrick Ewing and Pat Riley in 2008.  A total of twenty one members of this franchise have been inducted into the hall of fame. A number of awards have also been won including the NBA MVP once and the NBA Finals MVP twice by Willis Reed, the NBA Rookie of the Year three times, the NBA Sixth Man of the Year twice and the NBA Coach of the Year twice.
