For generations the amiable nanny has been nurturing the imagination of a worldwide audience unbarred by age. Broadway musical Mary Poppins is based on the book of the same name by the author P L Tavers. In 1964 the famous Disney version of the film came out making it an all time classic. The Broadway production debuted in 2006 at the Bristol Hippodrome before it moved on to Prince Edward Theater later the same year. Since then, the musical has won a number of awards in various categories.


See Mary Poppins spread her magic with the Banks’ family incepting with her very arrival at the Banks’ residence. The Banks is a dysfunctional family of two naughty children, a busy banker of a father and a dissatisfied mother. The play opens with the previous nanny storming out of the house. George Banks tears off the advertisement made by his kids Jane and Michael for the new nanny in the fireplace and whola, the benign Mary Poppins appears. The new nanny then teaches the children how to look beyond appearances and see people from within, she advices George to make a deal in his bank which, although immediately going wrong, is to benefit him at the end of the day

After a ruined tea party Mary takes the children out where they make friends with Bert and the bird woman. Mary’s alter-ego, George’s nanny from the past Miss Andrews, appears and everyone realizes how much they miss Mary. Miss Andrews was George’s nightmare reiterated with his children. The end of the second act sees a showdown between the two nannies with Miss Andrews being locked in the bird cage. After George’s successful deal at the bank, the family reconciliates and Mary Poppins decides it’s time to leave. The act ends with a sentimental kiss between Bert and Mary and Mr. and Mrs. Banks waltz away.


Laura Michael Kelly who played the lead won the Lawrence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical, the same award was also given for best choreography. The musical also won a Tony Award for best design of a musical, bagged two Drama Desk Awards in 2007 and Evening Standard Theater in 2005. The performers dance to the music and lyrics by Robert and Richard Sherman with George Stiles and lyrics by Anthony Drewe.
