Mamma Mia! Tickets Details
Mamma Mia is a musical the genius of which resides in the fact that it employs hit songs of ABBA, the Swedish dance/pop group that is marked among the biggest international acts of all time. It is written by Catherine Johnson, a British playwright, composed by Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson both of whom are ABBA’s former members. The musical’s title is based on ABBA’s 1975 chart-topping hit by the same name which later inspired a fictional plot. Andersson and Ulvaeus, composers of original ABBA music, became a part of the development of the musical since its very inception. The production also involved Swedish pop vocalist Anni-Frid, another former ABBA member, who has attended many of the musical’s premieres across the globe. Mamma Mia’s soaring popularity has brought in more than forty-two million audience, accumulating two billion dollars from all over the world since its opening in 1999. In fact, the musical won such a following that it led to its adaptation to a feature film in 2008.
Based on ABBA’s songs, Mamma Mia debuted in London in 1999, when ABBA Gold climbed up to the top of charts in the UK. The musical was a creation of producer Judy Craymer, who met with Anderson and Ulvaeus in 1983 while working on another musical called Chess alongside Tim Rice. ABBA’s track The Winners Take It All, gave her the idea of creating a musical owing to the theatrical possibilities these songs presented. The songwriters though not particularly enthusiastic about the project, were not totally against it either, so in 1997 Catherine Johnson was commissioned by Craymer to write its book. By the following year Phyllia Lloyd was the show’s director and it was on its way to open in 1999 at the West End’s Prince Edward Theatre. From here it was taken to the Prince of Wales Theatre in 2004, where it has since been playing till yet.
Mamma Mia has been staged all over the world including Paris, Oslo, Germany, Sweden and Ireland. There have been productions in many European and Asian locations as well as in United States. The productions have taken many tours such as Spanish, Dutch, Australian, North American and U.S tours. Some of the biggest ABBA’s hits included in Mamma Mia are Super Trouper, Knowing Me Knowing You, Voulez Vous, Dancing Queen, Money, Money, Money, The Winner Takes It All and SOS.
