After Robbie Merrill and Tony Rombola joined the band, they recorded their first CD titled ‘All Wound Up’. After that they played as a 1990s grunge cover band throughout the Boston area with drummer Joe Darco for the next two years. They had already established a solid reputation and following when their CD landed in the hands of a DJ for WAAF, a Boston radio station. WAAF featured ‘Keep Away’, it soared to the #1 spot and a New England record store chain, Newbury Comics, agreed to sell the CD on consignment. It was time for a new single and Godsmack recorded one titled ‘Whatever’, which became the new local favorite on WAAF.
Republic/Universal Records signed the band to a contract in the summer of 1998. Tommy Stewart replaced Darco, ‘All Wound Up’ was re-mastered and the self-titled debut CD ‘Godsmack’ hit the stores 6 weeks later. This lead to their first headlining tour named ‘The Voodoo Tour’. MTV's Fear later used ‘Voodoo’ as the theme song.
