Cats Tickets Details

When they say that there is no business like show business, they are really calling it like it is. Virtually every major inductee into show business is made to go through an initiation ritual. For some, it could be performing sexual favors or other demeaning acts that they might not particularly want to recall when trying to pen their autobiography. For others, depending on the nature of their expected level of success, especially when they are in for a major upgrading to a higher level of "illumination" and an A-list celebrity status, the ritual is likely to be staged so as to gauge as much public acceptance as possible. A case in point is Taylor Swift's initiation played out as a mock humiliation at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards on the occasion of her acceptance of her first award, with Kanye West and Beyonce doing the "honors". The setting of the musical Cats also makes for a similar "rite of passage" for a chosen feline from the tribe of the Jellicle Cats to be reborn as a more streamlined denizen of the esoteric Heaviside Layer. Grab your Cats tickets to be given a chance to witness the staging of a melodically masterminded "purrformance".

The musical Cats depicts the transition of the fickle felines from their inferior and revolting state of affairs to a more elevated and even revered level of existence, all via a ceremony that is no less occult than those of the ancient King Solomon or the royal political elite's lineage. Similar to the initiates of the world of music and celluloid, each member of the tribe of the Jellicle Cats posses three names; one that the humans address them with, the second used by their fellow felines and the third being a closely guarded secret. The Jellicle Ball itself pits together Heaviside hopefuls from all quarters of the Jellicle Cats' social order. There is Old Grumbie Cat, Bustopher Jones who is a cat of high social standing, the mischief making Rum Tum Tugger, Apsparagus who is a former theater performer and the bottom of the barrel Skimbleshanks, a railway cat. The master of ceremonies is none other than the Cats' elder Old Deuteronomy and it is him who will have the final say in which Cat gets to be flung up to the Heaviside Layer. However, Grizabella, the jezebel of the cat world and Macavity the scheming saboteur are adamant at disrupting the esoteric proceedings of the Jellicle Ball. However, even though Old Deuteronomy is spirited away by Macavity, he is conjured back by Mr. Mistoffelees to complete the illumination, which turns out to be for the "Memories" performing Grizabella.

It is no surprise that such a poetically insightful take on the lives of the fat Cats of our society was the work of one Old Possum aka T. S. Elliot. Published as a series of whimsical vignettes in his compilation titled Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats before the start of the Second World War, it was first adapted as an orchestral piece in 1954 by Alan Rawthorne and then rendered into the famed musical Cats in 1981 by composer poser Andrew Lloyd Webber. He started composing the songs in 1977, with the respective compositions first premiering at 1980's Sydmonton Festival

Cats premiered at the New London Theatre on London's exclusive West End, where nine years later, it became the longest-running musical after 3,358 performances and clocked a total of 8,949 showings at its closing in May 2002, holding the record till 2006. The Broadway premier took place at the Winter Garden Theatre in 1982 and it too held the record as the longest-running musical on Broadway till 2006 after having put in 6,138 performances by its closing in 2000.

In the last three decades, Cats has been performed around the world in ten different languages, ranging from the seminal English to being translated to Hungarian, German, Finnish to Spanish and Japanese. The role of Grizabella was famously played by Elaine Page, after replacing Judi Dench who had to bow out due to a heel injury. The musical Cats has dug its claws into a pair of Laurence Olivier Awards, seven Tony Awards, including ‘Best Musical’ and ‘Best Original Score’, a trio of Drama Desk Awards as well as  a Grammy for ‘Best Musical Cast Show Album’. So nab some Cats tickets now to be tunefully tainted and shrewdly serenaded by a catty crew.
